Buried among all the pips and pops of beacons and whatnot, some really odd things can show up on shortwave. In this example the alarm noise is accompanied by what sounds like a dying diesel engine and squeaky wheels. I tried a few different modes, with plain AM showing it best. The pitch of the alarm noise seems to be going up and down by itself (I only briefly tried tuning it on SSB). It wasn’t local interference - at the top of the hour (about 15:00UTC) it all ceased. Suffice to say, it’s creepy. According to ENIGMA, an alarm noise was mentioned being heard way back in 2002. www.cvni.net Mountains of info on other shortwave oddities can be found in ‘The Spooks’ newsletters… cvni.net
This thing is haunting me on the shortwave bands. This time it’s only 15kHz up from where it was a few days ago, and I’d only been tuning around the bands for a few minutes when it came up. At the start of the clip, there seems to be more than one alarm and other phenomena going on. Towards the end of the clip, it seems to break up as if it’s having difficulties. Some weird stuff… Incidentally, this frequency has some history - 9715kHz was one frequency used by US forces during the initial stages of the Iraq War for ‘Information Radio’ broadcast over Iraq.
